Germany Raises Monetary Limits for Appeal Cases

Germany has brought new limits for monetary amounts in appeal cases into force on 1 January 2026. The federal government increased the threshold for the monetary value of a case that triggers the possibility of a higher court review. The new limits apply to appeals and complaints in private law matters such as family, guardianship, inheritance and land registration. The value threshold rises from €600 to €1,000. In non‑admissibility complaints before the Federal Court of Justice and cost complaints the limits are raised from €20,000 to €25,000 and from €200 to €300 respectively. The change aims to reflect inflation and is expected to slightly reduce the number of appeals before state courts and the Federal Court of Justice.
