Italian respiratory infection rates drop in December week

The Italian National Institute of Health (ISS) reported in its RespiVirNet surveillance that the overall incidence of acute respiratory infections in the community fell to 14.5 cases per 1,000 residents during the week of 22–28 December, down from 17.1 the previous week. The decline may be linked to fewer general‑practice visits around Christmas, school closures, and a seasonal dip. Approximately 820,000 new cases were estimated, bringing the cumulative total to about 6.7 million since the start of surveillance. The highest incidence was in children aged 0–4, with 39 per 1,000. Incidence was high in Sicily and Campania, moderate in other regions, and low elsewhere. Hospital data showed 22.2 % positivity in the community and 50.3 % in hospitals. Severe influenza cases rose in week 51, mainly caused by A(H3N2), and were largely among unvaccinated individuals. Sequencing identified subclade K as predominant among circulating H3N2 strains, while all H1N1pdm09 strains fell into subclade D.3.1.
