Isabel Arends Appointed Director-General of RIVM

Isabel Arends will become director‑general of the Dutch National Institute for Public Health and Environment (RIVM) on 1 April 2026. The appointment was approved by the Ministerial Council following a proposal from Minister Rijkaart. Arends, a professor of sustainable organic chemistry at Utrecht University, has held senior roles at Utrecht and TU Delft, including dean of the Faculty of Science and director of the Bioengineering Institute. She will maintain a professorship at Utrecht while heading the RIVM, an independent scientific body that advises the government on health and environmental matters. The RIVM will continue to coordinate prevention programmes and support the country during public‑health crises under her leadership.
