NIST has announced that artificial intelligence (AI) is being introduced in many medical practices to transcribe patient–doctor conversations and automatically enter the data into electronic medical records. The goal is to save physicians time and allow them to focus on patients. The Institute stresses that for AI to be useful in health care, specific standards must be developed to ensure reliability and trustworthiness. These standards will address correctness, data integrity, and the detection of malicious alterations such as Trojans in training sets. NIST’s research also includes a risk‑management framework that can be used by hospitals to monitor AI tools. The agency aims to help the United States lead the world in safe AI deployment in medicine.
