ONS releases new real-time economic and social indicators

The Office for National Statistics has released a new set of real‑time indicators on economic activity and social change in the UK, dated 8 January 2026. These early experimental figures are produced through rapid‑response surveys, new data sources, and innovative methods. The release includes weekly automotive fuel‑spending estimates, daily system prices for electricity and gas, VAT flash‑estimate turnover diffusion indices, weekly potential‑redundancy counts from Insolvency Service HR1 forms, daily UK flight volumes, weekly Energy Performance Building Certificate issuances for England and Wales, and retail footfall data by region from BT Active Intelligence. Data are sourced from ONS calculations, Department for Energy Security and Net Zero, Elexon, National Gas Transmission, HMRC, EUROCONTROL, the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government, and BT Active Intelligence. The next update will appear on 15 January 2026. Contact the Real Time Indicators team at realtime.indicators@ons.gov.uk.
