Rijkswaterstaat is building ramps on both sides of the Zuidhorn bridge to restore partial use after steel cable fractures cut pedestrian and cyclist access. The bridge suffered broken cables linking the ballast box to the deck, mainly affecting pedestrians, cyclists and people with disabilities. Bridge lowered 2 m to 7.4 m clearance, allowing navigation and shortening road deck gap. Ramp designs ready; permits filed, weather may delay. Work planned to start between 12 and 18 January 2026 and should take about two days. Until the ramps are ready, shuttle buses continue to link Noordhorn and Zuidhorn. Motor traffic will detour via provincial road N355. Similar cable fractures found on three table bridges over Van Starkenborgh kanaal; Aduard replacement expected mid-March 2026. Zuidhorn bridge is part of Hoofdvaarweg Lemmer-Delfzijl.
