Nuclear Power Production Rises 4.8% in EU’s 2024

In 2024, 12 EU countries with nuclear electricity production generated 649,524 gigawatt hours (GWh), a 4.8% increase from 2023. This marks the second consecutive annual rise after a 2022 decline. Nuclear power accounted for 23.3% of the EU’s total electricity production. France led with 58.6% of EU nuclear output (380,451 GWh), followed by Spain (8.4%), Sweden (7.8%), and Finland (5.0%). France saw the highest growth at +12.5%, while Sweden and Slovenia increased by 4.5% and 4.2%, respectively. Other producers averaged a 4% decline, with the Netherlands down 10.3%. Germany, which halted nuclear production in 2023, was the second-largest producer before that. France and Slovakia relied most on nuclear energy (67.3% and 61.6% of total electricity). Non-nuclear producers include Denmark, Germany, and others. Slovenia’s plant is 50% co-owned by Croatia.
