EU Auditors to Assess Nuclear Safety Cooperation in Non-EU Countries

The European Court of Auditors (ECA) will publish a report in March 2026 evaluating the European Commission’s effectiveness in enhancing nuclear safety in non-EU countries. The audit examines the EU’s framework for international nuclear safety cooperation, financial support allocated between 2014 and 2024, and outcomes of funded measures in Armenia, Iran, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Ukraine, and Uzbekistan. Grants totaling €300 million and a €300 million loan to Ukraine were provided under the Instrument for Nuclear Safety Cooperation and Euratom programs. The ECA will assess funding allocation, results achieved, and the Commission’s monitoring of projects. The findings aim to inform EU legislation for the next budget period (2028-2034). The report follows previous audits on nuclear decommissioning and safety within the EU.
