Respiratory Infections Decline in Italy, High Intensity in Two Regions

Respiratory infections in Italy show a decline, with community acute respiratory infections (ARI) incidence at 11.3 cases per 1,000 people in the week of January 19-25, down from 12.7 the previous week. Estimated 621,000 new cases were reported, with cumulative totals reaching 9.8 million since surveillance began. Intensity remains high in Basilicata and Campania, moderate in Molise, Puglia, and Sardegna, and low elsewhere except Liguria. Influenza positivity rates reached 26.6% in the community and 24.3% in hospital settings. Severe cases decreased compared to the same period last year, with A(H1N1)pdm09 as the dominant subtype. Unvaccinated individuals accounted for most severe cases. A(H3N2) viruses were more prevalent in the community, while A(H1N1)pdm09 dominated in hospitals. No cases of unclassified influenza A were detected.
