Enhanced Surveillance for Infectious Diseases During Milano-Cortina 2026 Olympics

Beginning today, the Italian National Institute of Health (ISS) has initiated enhanced surveillance for infectious diseases during the Milano-Cortina 2026 Olympics, coordinated with Lombardy, Veneto, and Trentino-Alto Adige/South Tyrol regions. The 42-day surveillance, ending March 17, focuses on monitoring infectious disease signals, food and water contamination, and environmental pollutants via epidemic intelligence methods. National-level event-based surveillance will also activate during the Olympics, with ISS collaborating with WHO and ECDC to monitor international events linked to the Games. ISS Director Anna Teresa Palamara described the initiative as routine for large events, emphasizing its role in early detection and response to potential risks.
