According to preliminary data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics’ Occupational Requirements Survey, 18.5 percent of all workers in 2025 had self-paced workloads, where employees could largely direct their own tasks within general performance guidelines. Management occupations led with 88.5 percent of workers reporting this level of discretion. In contrast, food preparation and serving occupations had only 1.6 percent, and healthcare support occupations less than 0.5 percent. Arts, design, entertainment, sports, and media occupations had a self-paced workload rate of 48.1 percent. These findings illustrate wide variation in workload autonomy across occupational groups. The data are preliminary and will be expanded in the forthcoming “Occupational Requirements in the United States – 2025” report. The report is part of the Bureau’s annual analysis of job characteristics and will inform future labor policy.
