EU Agency Finds Growing Pressure on Civil Society Organisations

EU civil society organisations are facing increasing pressure that threatens their ability to safeguard fundamental rights, according to the European Union Agency for Fundamental Rights (FRA) in its latest civic space assessment. The report, released as the EU implements its first Civil Society Strategy, documents that 67 % of human‑rights organisations report online attacks or threats, 60 % face negative media coverage, 39 % experience politically motivated funding cuts and 36 % are subjected to excessive administrative controls or audits. The findings also highlight interference with assembly and expression, including at demonstrations. While some Member States have taken steps to support civil society, comprehensive protection strategies remain rare. FRA recommends enhanced monitoring, national support, protection of freedoms, greater participation in policymaking, safety measures for actors, and secure, non‑discriminatory funding.
