Rijkswaterstaat to Construct New Fish Ladder at Lith Dam

Rijkswaterstaat announced that it will build a second, fully new fish ladder at the Lith dam on the Maas river, after inspections revealed that the existing structure no longer functions optimally. The new ladder will be located between the dam and the lock and will feature a series of 15‑centimetre steps to accommodate the dam’s variable water level, which can reach a 3‑metre drop. A debris‑catching trap and a side channel will improve fish visibility and passage. The environmental permit was granted by the municipality of Oss in February, with objections allowed until 7 April 2026; the technical building permit has been requested. The project is part of the European Water Framework Directive’s ecological restoration programme and must be finished by December 2027.
