Canada’s 2022 Natural Resources Sector Uses 5.1 Tt Energy and Emits 385 kt CO₂ Equivalents

Statistics Canada released data for 2022 showing the natural resources sector’s environmental footprint. Total direct energy use for the sector was 5,101,800 terajoules, while direct greenhouse gas emissions were 385,450 kilotonnes. Within the energy sub‑sector, 3,589,644 terajoules of energy were used, generating 291,368 kilotonnes of emissions; oil and gas extraction alone accounted for 2,063,168 terajoules and 180,039 kilotonnes. Forestry extraction used 23,456 terajoules and emitted 2,967 kilotonnes, whereas mineral extraction used 283,393 terajoules with 15,546 kilotonnes of emissions. The table also lists energy services, primary manufacturing, electricity generation, and downstream activities, each with their respective energy use and emissions. Overall, the natural resources sector contributed a significant portion of Canada’s national energy consumption and emissions in 2022.
