France and South Korea Upgrade Bilateral Relations to Strategic Partnership

On 3 April 2026, French President Emmanuel Macron and South Korean President Lee Jae‑myung announced that the two countries would raise their bilateral relationship to a “global strategic partnership” to mark 140 years of diplomatic ties and Macron’s visit to Korea. The agreement expands cooperation in defence and security, including joint exercises, interoperability and information sharing; in economic and trade matters, it stresses full implementation of the EU‑Korea free‑trade agreement and joint projects on critical minerals, AI, semiconductors and renewable energy. Cultural ties will be deepened through a revised cooperation protocol and joint cultural summit in France. Both leaders pledged to strengthen multilateral work on climate, oceans, health, and to support the G7, the UN, and regional stability in the Indo‑Pacific.
