Health Care Spending Holds at 11.2% of Swedish GDP in 2024

Scandinavian Statistics Sweden (SCB) released a preliminary update of its 2024 Health Accounts. The share of health‑care spending in the national economy remained at 11.2 percent of gross domestic product (GDP), unchanged from 2023. Public authorities financed 86 percent of total health‑care expenditures, while households contributed 13 percent through patient fees and other charges. Total health‑care spending rose by 4.1 percent, or 28.3 billion Swedish kronor, to 719 billion kronor. Curative and rehabilitative services accounted for roughly half of spending, followed by 28 percent for elderly and disabled care, and a third share for medicines distributed to outpatients. Pandemic years 2020–21 saw slightly higher shares of 11.4 and 11.3 percent, with pre‑pandemic levels between 10.8 and 11.1 percent.
