UK Awards £80.5m for Open RAN Projects

On 1 April 2026 the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology announced that the Open Networks Ecosystem competition awarded about £80.5 million to 16 projects that develop and demonstrate open Radio Access Network (Open RAN) solutions for high‑density environments, hardware, software, and pilot deployments. The competition’s objectives were to optimise Open RAN performance, create interoperable software such as RIC technologies, and produce scalable hardware platforms. Projects delivered live demonstrations at venues like Twickenham Stadium and the Blackpool promenade, developed portable “cell on wheels” for event coverage, and produced energy‑efficient radio units. The funded work provides prototypes, test data, and operational lessons to support future UK open mobile network deployments and diversify the 5G supply chain.
