UK Seafarer Training Scheme Extended for Another Year

The Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) has extended the Support for Maritime Training (SMarT) scheme for another 12 months, making funding available until 31 March 2027. The extension follows a previous 12‑month continuation agreed last year and is funded by a multi‑million‑pound budget from the Department for Transport. SMarT supports cadets, junior officers and ratings, providing financial help for training that improves safety and career prospects. Companies sponsoring trainees may claim up to 50 % of eligible training costs. The MCA stated that the funding reflects its commitment to a skilled, safe and professional maritime workforce. The extension was formalised in Marine Information Note 678 Amendment 3. SMarT also supports self‑funded junior officers to obtain a Management Level Certificate of Competency and aims to increase the number of UK seafarers, drive recruitment by encouraging men and women to consider maritime careers, and create opportunities for new companies to access the scheme.
