EU green jobs up 2.2 million over last decade

According to Eurostat, employment in the European Union’s environmental economy grew from 3.6 million full‑time equivalents in 2014 to 5.8 million in 2023, an increase of 2.2 million jobs. The sector’s average annual growth rate was 5.5 percent, while 2023 alone saw a 4.2 percent rise from 5.6 million to 5.8 million full‑time equivalents. Jobs are created in environmental protection activities such as waste and wastewater management, and in resource management activities including energy‑efficiency measures, renewable‑energy production and forest management. In 2023 the sector produced €1.33 billion of output, up 4.3 percent from 2022, and has been growing at an average of 7.9 percent annually, almost doubling its output value since 2014.
