France Orders Fifth Advanced Frigate from Naval Group

On 31 March 2026, France’s Direction générale de l’armement (DGA) ordered a fifth Defense and Intervention Frigate (FDI) from Naval Group, extending a 2017 programme that expands the country’s surface fleet with advanced warships. The first FDI, Amiral Ronarc’h, entered service on 17 October 2025 and is on a long‑duration deployment. Subsequent frigates will be delivered between 2027 and 2032. FDIs are high‑sea, multi‑domain platforms capable of anti‑ship, anti‑air, anti‑submarine, asymmetric‑threat, cyber‑defence and special‑forces missions. They carry Exocet MM40 B3c missiles, Aster 15/30 air‑defence missiles, MU90 torpedoes, and 20 mm/76 mm naval guns. Fully digitised, they include a cyber‑secure data centre, an asymmetric‑threat counter‑measures post, and 360° surveillance. Their computing power, SEAFIRE radars and advanced sonar support operations and export appeal. Media inquiries: DGA press service (dga.presse.fct@intradef.gouv.fr, 0988672159).
