In 2024, 8.3 billion rail passengers travelled 420 billion kilometres on national journeys across the European Union, while an additional 150 million passengers covered 23.0 billion kilometres on international routes. This equates to an average of 958 kilometres per inhabitant for national trips and 53 kilometres per inhabitant for international journeys. The figures come from the Key figures on European transport 2025 edition, compiled by Eurostat. Passenger‑kilometre data exclude train crew and, for international journeys, count only the distance travelled on the national network within each country. Hungary, Austria and France recorded the highest average national distances, with 1 513, 1 493 and 1 442 kilometres per inhabitant respectively, whereas Greek rail passengers averaged only 70 kilometres per inhabitant on national journeys. This report provides a basis for comparing transport performance across EU and EFTA member states, supporting analysis of economic impact and environmental effects. The European Union aggregate does not include Belgium due to unavailable data.
