Over 115,000 Parents Receive Expanded Birth Leave in Q1 2026

Over 115,000 parents received the birth and child‑care benefit in the first quarter of 2026. The benefit, expanded in July 2025, normally lasts 17 weeks during the child’s first year, with an additional two weeks until the child turns eight. In the period January–March, 53,987 mothers and 61,120 fathers benefited, a total of 115,107 benefits, an increase of 1.3 % over the same period in 2025. The Social Security Institute paid 125,284 benefits, of which 1,320 were for single‑parent families. The average decision time was 9.85 days and the average leave length 112.2 days. Catalonia led with 23,026 benefits, slightly ahead of Andalucía.
