EU Commission introduces temporary state‑aid framework for sectors hit by Middle East crisis

The European Commission has adopted a temporary state‑aid framework to help EU member states support companies in agriculture, fishery, transport and energy‑intensive sectors that are affected by the Middle East crisis. The Middle East crisis Temporary State Aid Framework (METSAF) will be in force until 31 December 2026 and can be adjusted as the situation evolves. Under the scheme, member states can compensate up to 70 % of a beneficiary’s extra costs from fuel and fertiliser price rises, or provide simplified aid of up to €50,000 based on sector proxies. For energy‑intensive industries, aid intensity may rise from 50 % to 70 % for electricity costs, covering up to 50 % of consumption. Measures must be notified to the Commission for fast approval.
