New Gate Planned for Papendrechtsebrug (N3)

Rijkswaterstaat will install a new, heavier gate on the Papendrechtsebrug (N3) in early 2027 to accommodate increasing traffic demands. The bridge, opened in 1967, has been handling more and heavier traffic over the decades, and its existing gate is reaching the end of its service life. The new gate will measure 50 m long, 23 m wide and will weigh 1,450 tons compared with the current 900 tons. Work is currently underway at Hollandia in Krimpen aan den IJssel under contractor CMCP. After the gate is positioned in January or February 2027, it will be fine‑tuned and the new operating systems will be tested. Once completed, the movable section of the bridge will be ready for future traffic conditions.
