Over 4,000 DWP Staff Complete Training to Better Support Autistic and Learning Disabled People

The Department for Work and Pensions announced that more than 4,000 of its healthcare professionals have completed the Oliver McGowan training, a program designed to improve support for autistic people and those with learning disabilities. The training addresses “diagnostic overshadows” and equips staff with practical tools for making reasonable adjustments, such as extending assessment time, simplifying communication, and creating sensory‑aware Jobcentre environments. 231 active internal and 4,168 active external provider professionals have finished the training. The initiative is part of a wider effort to put disabled people at the centre of government policy, including free neurodivergence masterclasses for employers and new legislation that protects benefit claimants from losing support when trying work. The training reflects the government’s commitment to better serving disabled communities during Autism Awareness Month.
