Spain’s Effective Working Days and Hours Rise 15% and 16% in Q4 2025

Spain’s latest social security statistics show that effective working days and hours increased 15% and 16% respectively in the fourth quarter of 2025 compared with the pre‑pandemic period. The data, based on records from the General Treasury of Social Security, exclude days in ERTE, temporary incapacity, and other suspensions. Effective days rose 15% overall and 16.1% after removing suspensions. Hours worked, measured by a 100‑point reference from the last quarter of 2019, reached 118.7 points, an 18.7% rise, with effective hours up 16.1%. The share of days worked under permanent contracts grew from 72.3% in December 2021 to 88.1% in Q4 2025. Education activity led the increase with a 41.9% rise, followed by information and communications (+35.2%) and professional, scientific and technical activities (+27.5%). Women’s share of days worked rose from 47.4% in 2019 to 48.2% in Q4 2025, while men’s share fell from 52.6% to 51.8%. The ministry’s Secretary of State for Social Security and Pensions, Borja Suárez, noted that the rise in days and hours indicates a healthy labour market and improved employment quality.
