Spain Surpasses 22.1 Million Social Security Affiliates, Reaching New Employment Record

Spain has officially exceeded 22 million workers registered with the Social Security system for the first time, reaching 22,105,831 affiliates in April. The month added 223,685 new members, the third‑largest single‑month gain since records began, and a year‑on‑year rise of 517,192, or 2.4%. Minister Elma Saiz noted that the country has added about half a million new affiliates for four consecutive years and highlighted that April’s figure of 10.5 million female workers is the highest in the series, while foreign affiliates climbed to 3,248,247, 14.7 % of the total. The des‑seasonalised series has shown 63 consecutive months of growth, consolidating a 22‑million‑plus workforce. Women now make up 47.5 % of all affiliates, and permanent contracts have risen by 4.9 million since April 2021, reducing temporary employment to 11.6 %.
