EESC Calls for Stronger EU Bioeconomy Safeguards and Clear Direction

The European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) has released an opinion urging the European Union to adopt a robust, coherent bio‑economy strategy anchored in sustainability safeguards, circular design and reduced resource use. The EESC stresses that the strategy must be firmly linked to the European Green Deal and the Sustainable Development Goals, and should provide clear rules for which biological resources may be used as inputs across all supply chains, whether EU‑produced or imported. It calls for measurable, enforceable safeguards, a stronger commitment to the waste hierarchy, and a shift to long‑term, multi‑cycle solutions that maximise resource efficiency. The committee also stresses the importance of stakeholder involvement, including civil society and youth, through new governance platforms such as the Bioeconomy Regulators and Innovators Forum.
