Medal of Honor Recipient’s Remains Identified After 80 Years

More than 80 years after his death, the remains of Army Captain Willibald Bianchi, a Medal of Honor recipient, were identified by the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency (DPAA). In May 2026, Bianchi was buried in New Ulm, Minnesota, alongside his parents and sisters. The DPAA had identified Bianchi’s remains in August 2025 after exhuming and transporting the burial from the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific in Honolulu to a laboratory in Omaha. He was the 21st service member identified from that project. Bianchi’s family attended the burial and met with Secretary of War Pete Hegseth during a National POW/MIA Recognition Day ceremony.
