EU Regions Launch Sixth Mayor Paweł Adamowicz Award for Local Democracy

On 6 May 2026 the European Committee of the Regions (CoR) announced the launch of the sixth edition of the Mayor Paweł Adamowicz Award, inviting nominations of local leaders who defend freedom, democracy and the rule of law. The award, named after the assassinated mayor of Gdańsk, is a joint initiative of the City of Gdańsk, the CoR and the International Cities of Refuge Network. Nominations are open until 31 October 2026 and may be submitted by CoR members, mayors, regional presidents, MEPs and civil‑society organisations. Previous winners include Istanbul mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu (2026) and Kyiv mayor Vitaliy Klitschko (2025). The award recognises individuals who, often under difficult conditions, protect European values at the local level.
