Three passengers were medically evacuated from the Dutch‑flagged cruise ship m/v Hondius near Cape Verde. The two evacuation flights carried a 56‑year‑old Brit, a 41‑year‑old Dutchman, and a 65‑year‑old German to specialised hospitals in Europe. The ship, carrying about 150 people from several countries, had suffered several illnesses; two Dutch passengers died, one of whom was confirmed to have the Andes variant of hantavirus. Another passenger died on 2 May with an unknown cause. Dutch authorities, via the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, coordinated the operation with the RIVM, the Ministry of Health, the shipping company, and authorities in Cape Verde and other countries. Two Dutch medical specialists were also deployed to Cape Verde to assist on the ship.
