Rijkswaterstaat has finalized a revised plan for isolated nature ditches along the Maas near Beugen and Oeffelt as part of its ecological restoration programme under the European Water Framework Directive. The plan covers the Boxmeerse Veld, Viltsche Graaf and Virdsche Graaf sites. At Boxmeerse Veld, the ditch will be shallower, reaching only the clay layer instead of the sand layer, reducing the risk of soil desiccation and preserving existing Maasheggen. For Viltsche Graaf Noord and Zuid, ditches will also be shallower and barrier designs altered; a lowered threshold will improve fish passage in the north, while the south will remove thresholds to avoid increased wet‑land damage. The Virdsche Graaf ditch and pond will be removed due to potential negative impacts on the Natura 2000 area Oeffelter Meent. The plan is open for appeal until 7 July 2026.
