The Animal and Plant Health Agency’s National Wildlife Management Centre at Woodchester Park in Gloucestershire is celebrating 50 years of wildlife science. The centre unites scientists, veterinarians, ecologists and pathologists to study the links between wildlife health, farm animal health, human health and the environment. Over the past five decades the agency has developed badger vaccination programmes to protect livestock from bovine tuberculosis, monitored emerging wildlife diseases before they reach farms or the public, tracked environmental threats from pollutants and addressed invasive non‑native species. More than 75% of emerging diseases come from animals, placing the centre at the heart of the Agency’s “One Health” approach in partnership with the UK Health Security Agency. To mark the anniversary, APHA has partnered with Wild in Art and the National Trust to install a Wind in the Willows sculpture trail at Woodchester Park, accompanied by events, exhibitions and educational activities throughout the year.
