UK Celebrates 60 Years of the Chief Scientific Adviser

UK celebrates 60 years since the appointment of the first Government Chief Scientific Adviser, Sir Solly Zuckerman, in 1960. The role, now in its 14th holder, Professor Dame Angela McLean, has evolved from a part‑time advisory position to a full‑time role that informs ministers on science, technology, climate change, pandemics and other national challenges. Over six decades, 13 GCSAs have provided advice across medicine, ecology, biology and metallurgy, and helped establish groups such as the Scientific Advisory Group for Emergencies. A commemorative booklet was released, featuring reflections from past and present GCSAs, including Sir Robin Nicholson, Sir David King, Sir John Beddington, Sir Mark Walport, and interim GCSA Sir Chris Whitty. The publication highlights the growing demand for science advice in government.
