The Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (Dstl) successfully downloaded data from a low Earth orbit satellite using a laser communications ground station for the first time. During a 90‑second satellite pass, several gigabytes of data were transferred to the Archangel Lightworks TERRA‑M optical ground station in the Mediterranean region. The demonstration, performed by the SME Archangel Lightworks, shows the potential for faster and more secure communications for the UK armed forces. Laser communications use low‑power, non‑visible light instead of radio waves, enabling higher data rates and greater security. Dstl Chief Executive Dr Paul Hollinshead said the technology would greatly improve the speed and security of data between forces on land, sea, air and space. The project aligns with the Defence Industrial Strategy and the Strategic Defence Review.
