The first European Forum on Environmental Human Rights Defenders is scheduled to take place in Strasbourg, France, from 3 to 4 June 2026 at the Council of Europe. The forum, organized by the European Union Agency for Fundamental Rights (FRA), the United Nations Human Rights Office, and the Council of Europe, will feature opening remarks by FRA Director Sirpa Rautio. The agenda was developed in close consultation with environmental human rights defenders. Participants will discuss challenges, share experiences, and promote stronger protection for defenders. The event brings together the Special Rapporteur on Environmental Defenders under the Aarhus Convention, the UNECE Aarhus Convention secretariat, Human Rights Council Special Procedure mandate holders, and civil society organisations active in Europe. Organisers plan for participants to showcase work, exchange resources, and build networks.
