Rijkswaterstaat has announced the names of four new wildlife crossings over the A2 highway. The crossings, called Oevereind, Aw‑Kirk, Born to be Wild and Maesbaene, will be built over the next few years to link natural areas and allow animals to cross safely. The names were chosen after a public consultation that received more than 500 suggestions. Municipalities Sittard‑Geleen and Echt‑Susteren reviewed all entries, created a shortlist and the public voted. The winners are located at hectometer markers 227.8, 228.0, 233.1 and 237.4 respectively. Naming winners will receive an artist’s impression of their passage and may take part in the opening, which has yet to be scheduled. The crossings are part of a widening of the A2 between Vonderen and Kerensheide that adds a lane per direction to improve traffic flow and safety while protecting wildlife.
