The European Union Agency for Fundamental Rights (FRA) participated in the online launch of a new publication on civic space monitoring for the EU‑funded PROSECO project, which seeks to protect and expand civic space in Central Europe. PROSECO, covering the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Croatia and Slovenia, focuses on capacity building for civil society organizations, monitoring the state of civic space and launching advocacy campaigns to counter shrinking civil space. The project presented its final report at the event on 26 May and gave updates on the civic space situation in the four participating countries. The European Commission highlighted how the EU Strategy for Civil Society can be used to strengthen civic space at national level. FRA made concrete suggestions for next steps, including enhanced monitoring, holistic protection, coalition building, hope‑based narratives and sustainable funding.
