German import prices rise 5.3% in April 2026, export prices increase 2.9%

German import prices rose 5.3% in April 2026 compared with the same month a year earlier, the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) said. The increase is the largest year‑on‑year gain recorded since January 2023. Export prices were 2.9% higher than in April 2025, the steepest rise since March 2023. Destatis attributed the bulk of the import spike to a 31.0 % year‑on‑year rise in energy prices and a 7.8 % jump in intermediate goods, both driven by the conflict in Iran and the Middle East. While energy and intermediate goods rose sharply, agricultural and consumer imports fell 4.7 % and 1.4 % respectively year‑on‑year. Prices were 1.2 % higher than the previous month.
