May 2026 Consumer Prices Rise 3.2% Annually

According to provisional estimates released by Italy’s National Institute of Statistics (Istat) on 29 May 2026, the national consumer price index (NIC) excluding tobacco rose 0.4% in May compared with the previous month and 3.2% over the year, up from 2.7% in April. The increase was driven mainly by higher prices of non‑regulated energy (+12.6%), regulated energy (+5.8%), transport services (+1.8%) and recreational, cultural and personal care services (+3.0%). Core inflation excluding energy and fresh food also rose to 1.8% from 1.6%. Prices of goods and services both saw annual gains of 3.5% and 2.8%, respectively. The overall inflation for 2026 remains 2.6% and the core component 1.6%.
