Australia’s construction sector grew 3.4% in the March quarter, with engineering construction leading gains. Total construction work done rose to $83.4 billion in seasonally adjusted terms, up 3.4% from the previous quarter. Building work increased by 0.6% to $44.7 billion, while engineering construction jumped 6.9% to $38.7 billion. The trend estimate for total construction work did a modest 0.5% rise to $80.6 billion. Across states, Queensland, Western Australia and Tasmania recorded increases in total construction work, whereas New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia, the Northern Territory and the Australian Capital Territory saw declines. Data were collected from about 80% of surveyed construction entities and are preliminary estimates.
