At the end of 2025, Statistics Finland reported that Finland had 1,477,601 families, an increase of 5,085 from the previous year. Families represented 70 % of the population, slightly lower than the 80 % share in 1995. The most common family type was a couple without children, accounting for 36 % of all families. Families with children numbered 545,917, making up 37 % of families. In 81 % of families both parents or the single parent spoke Finnish as their mother tongue. Child families had an average of 1.78 children, with 45 % single‑child and 39 % two‑child families. These figures reflect gradual demographic shifts in Finland’s household structure.
