Govia Thameslink Railway transferred to public ownership

Govia Thameslink Railway services have been transferred to public ownership, becoming the fifth operator under the Passenger Railway Services (Public Ownership) Act. On 31 May, operations that run as Thameslink, Southern, Great Northern and Gatwick Express are now run by Thameslink Southern Great Northern Limited, a subsidiary of DfT Operator Limited. The new operator will double Gatwick Express services each hour from December, add early‑morning trains on Saturdays and Mondays during the summer, and increase Great Northern off‑peak services from Moorgate. It will recruit 75 additional drivers and complete automatic train operation training by December 2026. The public ownership programme aims to finish by the end of 2027, with further transfers of Chiltern and Great Western Railways expected later this year. The Railways Bill will create Great British Railways to improve performance and passenger experience across the network.
