NHS Modernisation Bill introduces single patient record

London – The NHS Modernisation Bill, debated on 1 June 2026, will create a single patient record that joins fragmented medical information across England. Under the bill, all NHS providers, including hospitals and general practices, must share data so doctors, nurses and specialists can securely view a patient’s full medical history regardless of where the patient is treated. The record aims to stop patients from repeating their history, improve safety, and reduce duplicate prescribing. It is expected to save the NHS more than £20 million a year, cut A&E attendances by up to 20 000, and free up around 500 000 hours of clinicians’ time. The government also plans to abolish NHS England and transfer its functions to the Department of Health and Social Care.
