CISA Recommends Enhanced Security for Automatic Tank Gauge Systems

CISA and government partners released a joint fact sheet on June 2, 2026, urging owners and operators of automatic tank gauge (ATG) systems to strengthen security. The guidance recommends using strong passwords, removing ATG systems from internet exposure, and regularly auditing and monitoring logs. ATG systems are common in the Energy, Chemical, Food and Agriculture, and Transportation sectors for remote monitoring of fuel and liquid levels, temperature, and leak detection. If compromised, cyber actors could disrupt operations, manipulate data, and increase risks of undetected leaks, environmental hazards, and physical damage. Acting Director Nick Andersen highlighted CISA’s collaboration with the FBI, NSA, DOE, EPA, TSA, DOT, and USDA and offered voluntary support to help organizations respond and recover.
