Finland’s first instance courts handed out 50,691 criminal sentences in 2024, a 2 % decline from the 51,600 sentences recorded in 2023. The largest reduction in numbers occurred in traffic‑related offenses, while sentences for crimes against life and health increased the most. Property crimes (31 %) and traffic offences (29 %) accounted for the largest share of all sentences. 81 % of those sentenced were men and 19 % were women, and more than half were aged 25‑49. About 5,900 absolute prison terms were imposed, an 8 % rise from the previous year, and 15 life sentences were handed down, six more than in 2023. Courts issued over 32,000 fines, with nearly 33,000 court‑issued penalties and 76,600 police fines.
