On 3 June 2026 the UK government announced the launch of the Multi‑Hazard Research Network (MHRN), a new collaboration led by the Institute of Development Studies. The network brings together UK and international experts to provide rapid evidence and specialist advice during emerging infectious disease outbreaks and other crises, including the current Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda. A Rapid Response Unit is already supporting the response with data analysis, local context insights and modelling. The UK has committed up to £5 million to research new treatments and rapid diagnostics for the Bundibugyo species of Ebolavirus, and will conduct clinical trials with national and international partners. The MHRN will also link to UK government agencies such as the UK Health Security Agency and the Met Office.
