Norwegian patent, design and trademark applications rise in 2025

Statistics Norway reported that in 2025 Norwegian enterprises filed 1,729 patent applications, 1,394 design registrations, and 15,526 trademark registrations. Patent filings rose 32.5 % from 2024 and 9.4 % from 2021, while design filings increased 8.0 % from 2024 and 7.9 % from 2021. Trademark filings grew 5.4 % from 2024 but fell 14.4 % over the five‑year period. Of all applications, 65.1 % of patents, 14.1 % of designs, and 25.4 % of trademarks were filed by Norwegian applicants. The data also explain the legal categories: a patent protects a concrete solution to a technical problem, a trademark is a distinctive characteristic that can be represented graphically, and a design covers the appearance and shape of a product or its part, including physical items and web layouts.
