EU deposit guarantee schemes reach €85bn, meeting legal target

EU deposit guarantee schemes now hold €85 billion in funds, meeting the legally required minimum of 0.8 % of covered deposits, the European Banking Authority (EBA) announced on 30 June 2026. By the end of 2024, all 33 national schemes reached the target level, and 32 of 33 remained above it at the end of 2025, with one scheme falling short after a recent payout. Covered deposits rose 2.9 % to €9.1 trillion between 2024 and 2025, while DGS buffers grew 4.9 %. The schemes, which guarantee up to €100,000 per depositor per bank, are funded through regular bank contributions and can access extraordinary contributions or short‑term financing if needed. The EBA’s annual report provides transparency for depositors, markets and policymakers.
