The European Environment Agency released a briefing on 29 June 2026 showing that while the EU has made progress in managing invasive alien species, their spread continues. During the 2019–2024 reporting period, 23 member states carried out more than 300 rapid eradication actions, with 60 % judged fully, partially or temporarily successful. In addition, more than 4,200 longer‑term management measures were implemented, reducing harm to biodiversity in over half of cases. The briefing covers 87 species designated as invasive alien species of Union concern, noting hotspots in densely populated areas, rivers, and major transport hubs, especially in southern and western Europe. Although Regulation 1143/2014 has been largely implemented, the report stresses that increased effort is required to contain species that are already widespread.
